Hi Katy, first time poster... I commend you for coming to that conclusion. I've been getting more than a little disillusioned with writing for content mills and have been tossing this around for a while. Katy - Kudos to you for realizing that the ideal job setup doesn't have to be all or nothing. Not only do I think that you'll be able to balance both retail and writing, but I actually feel that -- for some people -- supplementing one's writing income with part-time work can provide the best balance of all: a regular income, plus the freedom to concentrate on the writing you enjoy most.

Hahahahahahaha!! I was not expecting to see my name and you totally made me laugh out loud :) I don't think you are hurting your chances at all. In fact, I think you might breath new life into your writing (not that you need to) as you start interacting with people again on a daily basis. Keep all your fun NASCAR gigs and focus your marketing on that--you will simply replace the writing you hate with a regular job...six of one... Anyway, it doesn't really matter what I think--you have to do what makes you happy no matter what it is.

Actually I started writing because I love it. I've been writing since I could speak (my mom still has a newspaper I made in the 3rd grade!). At the same time though, I recently started applying for jobs in my original professional field. As much as I love writing, I miss having a guaranteed paycheck every week and the chance to work around others a lot more.

I also wanted to say that I think some writers put too much emphasis on social networking. I've seen/heard a lot of writers who spend 1-4 hours every day focusing on reading their friends stuff before they even start writing. Just think how much they'd make if they set to work right away!

I basically spend some time with the boyfriend when I get up, see him off to work and then do my own work. By the time he gets home, I'm done and we can make dinner, watch a movie and spend some time together. At the end of the night I check out blogs and what not (if I have the time), but I don't make it my priority...

The best thing about using social media to promote your work is that it indelibly ties you to your specialty. So anytime anyone needs a Nascar writer--you come to mind. From what I've heard the pay isn't much (I think it's residual based) but it can look good on a resume. The residual income could work for you since NASCAR is a pretty popular topic. You just keep racking up those NASCAR credits and who knows where you might end up! This site doesn't pay much (http://www.racingjunky.com/nascar_writers_needed.htm) but it may be your next stop. Get enough credits and I'd start querying some racing magazines and then NASCAR (i.e. The Holy Land) itself.

I know I think everyone has had the same issues with Demand... I still love them though, they are always there when you need them! I've just been trying to get other things accomplished when the system isn't working. I'm sure the kinks will be ironed out soon!

I think free lance writers should receive much more than what they are earning now a days, all things you have mentioned in this post is really what those writers should receive to there employers.
